My favourite place to picnic is in a place called St. Margaret’s at Cliffe. Close to Dover, this place is only an hour and 15 minutes from where I live, yet it somehow manages to feel like stepping back in time. There is a small car park on the shingle beach at St. Margaret’s Bay, from where you can make your ascent. It’s quite a climb but from there you can sit and enjoy your hamper, surrounded by natural beauty, whilst watching the ferries to France glide in and out of Dover. It’s the closest point in England to France and the beach in the bay is a popular starting point for cross-Channel swimmers. It really is a lovely place to visit and I hope it never changes!
