  3. I’d take my hubby back to Crooklets Beach in Bude. Quiet but always something to see whether it’s the great views, exciting surfer’s or it’s beautiful sunset’s… We love it!

I’d take my Mum & daughter to Virginia Water Lake as we have a special tree there where I first told my Mum I was pregnant & it was also the last place we spend time with my grandmother, all the family, before she passed. We have just moved to this area so are making the most of our first spring/summer here and exploring and these are just perfect spots for a picnic.

  83. I’d picnic at the top of Pendle hill. Last time i attempted to walk to the top I had an attack of vertigo and had to retire, gasping for breath. I felt ashamed to see toddlers passing me at speed – it was such an easy climb. Now, at the age of 71 and after years of acclimatisation, I think I can do it – and I will! Wish me luck 🍀

  87. Favourite spot for a picnic is in the sand dunes of the Thar desert in Rajasthan off the road to Jodhpur. We sit with our Indian family on top the dunes with our huge picnic, after spot of “dune bashing” by an open topped Jeep, watching the sun setting in the distance. Family children playing with the sand whilst adults chat over dinner. Indian picnics are like nothing you have seen anywhere else. We can see for miles over the desert with small villages in the distance. We often even get to listen to music being played somewhere in the distance being gently carried on the desert breeze. Cant beat it. We all love the location and return at every opportunity, but wont reveal exactly where as then it will become less of a quiet space.

  97. I love picnicking on the Malvern Hills in Worcestershire. As a child I would go walking on the hills every weekend either with my sisters or my current boyfriend! We would take a few sandwiches and chocolate biscuits. The very best thing was filling a bottle with Malvern water at St Anne’s Well. It tasted like champagne and still does!
    Nowadays I would go with my sisters and we would reminisce and probably have a much more sophisticated picnic than when we were young!

  131. Back in the 1960s I “bunked off” school one afternoon to meet my boyfriend, now husband, at Alexandra Palace (Ally Pally). We spent the afternoon at the surrounding park with a simple picnic. I would love to replicate that but with a sumptious picnic in a wicker basket, ours was in a supermarket polybag. It would truly be a trip down memory lane!

The children would be running about, my husband would be pretending he isn’t in charge of the food (for everyone’s safety), and we’d all be happily grazing from the hamper. It’s simple, it’s peaceful, and it’s exactly the kind of moment that makes summer feel like summer.

    I was based there in the nineties .
    Never took the time to explore what was there.
    Went back last year and realised what I had missed .
    The museum a look around the church a coffee in the cafe .
    A slow walk around the ramparts and see the views across the water .

Any of the National Trust’s gardens, as most have picnic tables, (then I don’t have to carry a chair or table myself) but always with my husband Alan, and often with our friends Steve and Sue, or Nick and Natalia, as we all love to picnic, (especially with salads and a home made cake, best on sunny days), fingers always crossed, as we did all end up sitting in puddles on our fold up chairs once, as the storm blew in so fast and caught us out!

  204. Walking along the coast both west and east of Criccieth in North West Wales, it is so energising, the views are magnificent. The remains of Criccieth Castle are well worth exploring as well. To finish the day off call in at the Fish and Chip shop just down the road from the castle, though you may well have to queue as it is very popular!

  241. My favourite place to picnic is in a place called St. Margaret’s at Cliffe. Close to Dover, this place is only an hour and 15 minutes from where I live, yet it somehow manages to feel like stepping back in time. There is a small car park on the shingle beach at St. Margaret’s Bay, from where you can make your ascent. It’s quite a climb but from there you can sit and enjoy your hamper, surrounded by natural beauty, whilst watching the ferries to France glide in and out of Dover. It’s the closest point in England to France and the beach in the bay is a popular starting point for cross-Channel swimmers. It really is a lovely place to visit and I hope it never changes!
