Discover the seasons Down Under: unveiling the best of Australia all year round

Australia is a vast and diverse country that offers a range of activities throughout the year. From sunny beaches in the summer to icy slopes in the winter. Holidays to Australia are perfect for all-year-round adventures for all types of travellers.

Summer in Australia – December to February

Summer makes for the perfect time to visit those pristine beaches and feel the sand between your toes. Looking out onto crystal clear water and basking in the sunshine, summertime always makes for a great holiday season and Australia is no exception. Some wonderful beach locations include the Whitsunday Islands, Kangaroo Island and Vivonne Bay. Many festivals take place during this time of year, as a way to take advantage of the clear skies and sunny moods. The Sydney New Year’s Eve fireworks are renowned to be a spectacle as well as the Illawarra Folk Festival and the Falls Festival.

Autumn in Australia – March to May

Though not as popular as summer, autumn is still a beautiful season offering a mirage of reds, oranges and yellows. With cool, yet comfortable, weather the autumn season in Australia is perfect for hiking, cycling and exploring the vast Australian countryside. In the big cities across the country Autumn sees some of the biggest festivals taking place at this time. And if you are still craving some sunshine it is still possible to get a dose of vitamin c at the beach in regions including the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. Autumn is also a key time of year for wildlife viewing – you’ll find tiny turtles hatching in the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

Winter in Australia – June to August

Many may be surprised to hear that you can hit the slopes and embrace the snow during Australia’s Winter. Book a trip to one of many ski resorts like Thredbo, Falls Creek and Smiggin Holes. Here, you’ll find miles of pistes for skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing, providing fun for everyone. If snow isn’t for you and you want temperatures a little warmer during your winter holiday in Australia, plan a visit to the North – Darwin, the Top End, and the Kimberley offer balmy days and cooler evenings. Winter is also a great time to explore the Great Barrier Reef as the water temperature remains warm. And for wildlife seekers winter is whale watching season so head out on a boat for a glimpse of magnificent humpbacks migrating north.

Spring in Australia – September to November

As Australia’s winter season comes to an end, spring bursts into action creating a kaleidoscope of colours to behold. Take a drive through Western Australia’s wildflower country to truly experience the spectacle of life and nature, where you’ll be met with fields awash with colours beyond your wildest imagination. As well as being met with lush greenery and the appearance of some shy wildlife, such as koala and kangaroo joeys leaving their mother’s pouches for the first time, this season is a nature lovers’ paradise. You’ll find sunny days and cool nights which make for pleasant exploring across the country.

Wet season – November to March

Australia’s north experiences wet and dry seasons – seasons of extreme rainfall to seasons of extreme dry heat. Australia’s wet season makes way for an array of activities like exploring flourishing rainforests and thunderous waterfalls. Local markets and restaurants will offer seasonal food that is in abundance during the wet season. For wildlife lovers visit Kakadu to view vibrant bird life, crocodiles and majestic water buffalo. Toward the end of the wet season, you can travel to Katherine and witness the spectacular Nitmiluk Gorge at full flow. Australia’s wet season also provides the perfect conditions for a fishing frenzy, great for those looking for a fun activity or something different. As long as you pack accordingly with waterproofs and umbrellas, you can take advantage of great deals during the wet season on holidays in Australia’s north.
