Fulfilling one of his wish list dreams, Captain Sir Tom Moore, 100 years old and an inspiration for all Silver Travellers, jetted off to Barbados in December 2020 for the holiday of a lifetime, courtesy of VisitBarbados and British Airways.
His daughter told BBC Breakfast, “He sat in 29 degrees outside, he read two novels, he read the newspapers every day, and we sat, and we talked as a family, we went to restaurants (because we could there) and he ate fish on the beach and what a wonderful thing to do.” Source – Liverpool Echo

Often called the ‘sport of kings’, polo on the island attracts internationally renowned players, including the British royal family, and is a wonderful spectator sport. A visit to one of the splendid grounds, including Buttals Polo Club, Lion Castle, Clifton and the flagship Barbados Polo Club, is a real treat: a smart outing, with the laid-back Bajan vibe and Argentinian gauchos.
The water sports on offer are excellent – sail on a crewed catamaran along the west coast, swim with the turtle in the gentle, warm sea. Or try a spot of surfing, knees allowing, or watch it, near Bathsheba on the dramatic east coast. Silver Sands in the south-west is well known for lively wind and kite surfing. Give the popular SUP a go, perfect for those looking for a less frantic water sport. Prepare to fall in a few times before you get your balance!
Foodie delights
Barbados hosts a varied and internationally recognised culinary scene: it has sometimes been called ‘culinary capital of the Caribbean’. Opt for a romantic, cliff top table for two in the moonlight, or a long, lazy lunch on the sand with the family. Or head to Oistins for the Friday evening fish fry: join local families having supper bought from the street stalls, with a truly Caribbean atmosphere. History and culture
In 2011, UNESCO appointed historic Bridgetown and its garrison as a World Heritage Site: it is a fortified port town with military and mercantile importance going back centuries.
For further fascinating historical insights, the Barbados National Trust looks after buildings of architectural importance, including a windmill and synagogue, as well as gardens and areas vital for indigenous flora and fauna.
