When my sister and I saw The Tempest last week at the Festival Theatre in Stratford, Ontario, life was imitating art. There was quite a storm going on outside! While we were having lunch, the power went out. Luckily, the theatre is on a different grid than the area of town of the restaurant.
It had been eight years since we had seen a production of The Tempest at this theatre and it was excellent. I wondered how this one would stack up. It was equally magnificent. From the opening storm aboard the ship, the production had us enthralled. The ship’s sail became the waves in the sea the passengers were trying to escape until everything disappeared into what had been the hold of the ship.
Geraint Wyn Davies shines in the role of Prospero and Marissa Orjalo delights as Ariel as she bounds around the stage doing his bidding. If you get the chance to see it, jump at it. It’s on until October 24, 2026.
