Having completed around a 5 mile walk along the River Itchen in Winchester, we needed a good late lunch with our local friend suggesting “The Queen Inn”:http://www.thequeeninnwinchester.co.uk/ The Queen Inn.
At 1.30pm on a weekday, it was full but we spied a reserved table. Fortunately, the girl behind the bar thought the people who’d reserved it had arrived but sat elsewhere, so we grabbed it.
There was a good menu, a separate sandwich menu and specials, so basically something for everyone. We all opted for different dishes: a cheese and ham sandwich which came with crisps and salad, a smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwich with the crisps being swapped for chips for £1.25, gnocchi with wild rocket and for me, a hearty pie of the day, an individual beef and ale pie, served with mashed potato and vegetables. Everyone was satisfied both with the quality and quantity of the food. With a soft drink and a couple of bottles of wine, the bill came to £75.
As this is dog walking territory, dogs are welcome and there is a micro-brewery.
