A couple of years ago my virtual book club decided to read a play and then go to see the play in Stratford, Ontario. A chance for us all to get together for an overnight trip since we all live in various cities. Last year we read/saw As You Like It. This year we read The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. The book was adapted for the stage by Kim Selody. I still had my old high school copy of the book and as I was rereading it I wondered how on earth they would be able to reproduce what I was reading onto a stage. Amazingly well, it turns out.
The production is at the Avon Theatre in downtown Stratford until October 23, 2026. Admittedly, the production is geared towards children, but the set, costumes and production alone make it worth seeing. Everything from the trolls, goblins, elves, giant spiders and Gollum will keep you interested in Bilbo Baggins and his journey with the dwarves to reclaim their home.
