This 12thC ruins of an abbey founded by the Cistercian monks is run by Cadw. It represented good value for a historical and tranquil visit to a beautiful area on a sunny day and took us one and a half hours. There are other attractions nearby we were visiting (Cwrs Caron and the Hafod Estate) which took up most of the day.
A few things to look at like the huge west doorway, ruins of the chapel, different from the rest of the abbey, remarkably surviving tiles and exhibitions. The monks were involved in building, farming, lead mining and quarrying, woodland and water management, but they also practised the quieter skills of writing and copying manuscripts. The abbey had connections also to the great Welsh princes in the middle ages. A lot of this activity is reflected in the site so it is a pleasant, informative visit.
