We travelled by train in a relaxed stupor from London to Carcasonne, and subsequently indulged in three days exploring said beautiful city and castle before embarking on a pleasurable Canal du Midi experience.
From Trebes to Port Cassafieres, after our morning croissants, we cruised our Le Boat leisurely
only distracted by locks or stunning vineyards and villages beckoning us. How could six friends resist! The beautiful local wines slid easily down with the delicious French cuisine. Canal-side auberges and delightful village square cafes and restaurants offered an array of dishes from pizza, pasta, croque monsieur or a traditional richly flavoured, cassoulet de canard often found on the plat du jour menus.
Of course, we had to burn off some of the gastronomic delights, so soon after disembarking Le Boat, we arrived at the beach, Hotel Logis Mirador overlooking the enticing Mediterranean, and cycled along coast and canal on hired bikes before earning a restful few days lounging to the sounds of rhythmic waves. Naturally, we had to return home and SNCF and Eurostar made sure we enjoyed a swift and pleasant train journey back. A perfectly wonderful trip for us at sixty plus!
