Reasons for trip

Galton Blackiston is a former Head Chef at the popular Lake District Miller Howe Hotel.

He is a big mate of the popular Yorkshire TV Chef James Martin and was a regular contributor to James’ Saturday morning show “Saturday Kitchen”.

Galton has held a Michelin Star for 14 years and owns Morston Hall which is one of the country’s leading country hotels and has earned numerous prestigious awards.

A couple of years ago I learned that he had branched out with partners into the UK’s favourite dish and had opened a Fish & Chip Restaurant just a stones throw from the Pier and Beach in Cromer on the Norfolk Coast.

I have eaten Cod and Chips three times now in his aptly named No. 1 Restaurant and Takeaway.

I have always championed the quality of Fish & Chips from Whitby on the North Yorkshire Coast, but having now sampled these three times in the last two years, Whitby needs to watch out for this newcomer on the east coast!

Crispy batter, proper North Sea Cod, Mushy Peas and absolutely no excess fat.

Washed down with a somewhat overpriced Norfolk Cider!

Lovely!
