The Magazine Brow Conservation Area in New Brighton is on the Wirral side of the River Mersey (CH45 1HP) The residents hold a Scarecrow Festival each year. The imaginative figures are dotted around outside the cottages, in the front gardens and within Vale Park. In some cases, there were Q R codes to scan; this modern piece of technology is beyond me, but my young granddaughter had no problem. For example, she was able to learn all about the old dairy and its history.
Walking along the pedestrian promenade here, you have a great view of the Liverpool waterfront on the opposite side of the river. I do regular Heritage Walks/Talks in this area because there is a wealth of social history about the gunpowder magazines, the Battery and many stories about the people who lived in the cottages.
All year-round youngsters can enjoy the Fairy Village in the park and the children’s play area. The Bandstand is the venue for regular entertainment. There is a cafe in Vale House and my granddaughter made a beeline to enjoy an enormous ice cream!
Vale Park volunteers have a programme of events throughout the year. However, if you’re in the Wirral area and looking for a pleasant day out with the grandchildren in the summer, then the Magazine Brow area is ideal. A hidden gem indeed….
