On the banks of the River Spree and a short walk from both Museum Island and the Friedrichstrasse Bahnhof is the Grill Royal. We had an early booking, arriving at the opening time of 6pm, and expected to be the only diners. However the reputation and popularity of Grill Royal meant that it was bustling on opening its doors.
The staff were swift and efficient in taking us to our table, and offering menus, but we did not feel hurried, and our waiter was both relaxed and professional. The menu offered seasonal dishes as well as more standard fare. We opted for the lobster bisque which was light and delicious, and the bread accompanying it was not heavy but was flavoursome. We followed this with differently sourced steaks, a Pomeranian and a German. Both were cooked exactly as requested and our knives slid through them without effort. The sides, spinach and French fries, were both perfectly cooked and substantial enough to share. There was an excellent wine list, and a glass of red wine, recommended by the waiter, was very good.
The lightness of the food, and the unhurried service, meant that desserts were possible, and a chocolate mousse lived up to the standard of the previous courses. Full marks to the waiters who, despite a full restaurant, created an atmosphere of relaxation rather than making us feel that our table was needed for the next customers and racing us through our meal.
As advertised this is a steak and fish restaurant, so do not expect vegetarian options. Unfortunately it is only accessible via steps so not friendly for wheelchair or disabled visitors. However, work was going on above the restaurant which may mean there would be street level access on its completion.
