We visited Deal in June 2025 as part of our holiday in Kent. Arriving by train. we strolled around this attractive seaside town with its landmark pier with gorgeous views of the pebbly beach stretching miles in either direction. By the entrance to the pier is a bronze sculpture called “Embracing the Sea”.
Also, on the seafront is Deal Castle owned and managed by English Heritage. Built for King Henry VIII ,it is a fine example of Tudor artillery defence against threatened invasion. There are a number of artefacts, a souvenir shop and you can climb onto the battlements.
However ,one of the most surprising, unique and interesting buildings is the Timeball Tower. For only £3 admission the museum volunteers guide you through the history of this iconic building. It is located on the seafront between the pier and the castle. The working Timeball is a rare example of early visual signalling methods. Using a combination of a chronometer and telegraph the building enabled accurate navigation worldwide and saved thousands of seafarers’ lives. The museum is on four floors with no ramp or lift access. Inside you can explore the original operating movements and timepieces. Once you’ve got your breath back at the top of the tower, you can get a panoramic view with the aid of the binoculars provided – along the white cliffs of Thanet and even as far as France. Within the museum there are interactive boards and a superb scale model of HMS Victory. You can also learn about the lives of ordinary people and all the smuggling that went on in times past. And talking of time -outside you can watch the Timeball drop on the hour too.
With its historic Georgian town houses, fishermen’s cottages, independent shops, waterfront bistros and yet another Deal museum – there is a GREAT DEAL to see and experience in Deal.
