To finish our week’s holiday at the Macdonald’s Spa and Resort in Pennal, we booked a meal at the riverside for Friday evening dinner. It is a busy restaurant and bar throughout the week so it is always best to book in advance – most guests are in formal or smart casual wear.
Les’s favourite, Fish Stew, was a mix of seafood in rich spicy tomato-based sauce served with fresh garlic bread – smelled very tempting! It definitely had full marks from him, even on a par with our review of the famous Fish Stew at Victoria Bar in Malta.
I also went for the fish, but this time salmon en croute with asparagus and sautéed new potatoes. Light fluffy pastry was perfect as it held the salmon together without overpowering it or making it too stodgy. The house Sauvignon Blanc was ideally matched with the fish so I stayed with this while Les tried one of their light-coloured guest ales. We actually couldn’t manage a dessert this time although I did compromise by eating both bits of fudge included with the coffee! Excellent quality food at a fair price of £14 for main course, this was a lovely way to end our week away.
