In one of the most prestigious streets in Edinburgh – Charlotte Square, is the superb Georgian town house. It was designed by the acclaimed Scottish architect Robert Adam. The luxurious interiors contain ornate rooms where the wealthy Lamont family would entertain their guests. On the walls are works of art by some renowned Scottish artists such as Alexander Nasmyth, Henry Raeburn and Allan Ramsay.
As we went from room to room the knowledgable room guides entertained us with stories about former inhabitants and their lives. There was a group of people from Boston USA touring around at the same time as us ,and it was obvious that they were really fascinated with the whole story. As we absorbed the grand surroundings of the drawing room it was easy to imagine how the young ladies and gentlemen would socialise. The collection of various objects provided a social history of those times. One curiosity in the bedroom was the pouches at the head of the four-poster bed which were there to hold pocket watches. The fine porcelain and furniture reflected the elegant lifestyle of the Lamont family. Then of course the basement was the domain of the servants and this was in stark contrast to the upper rooms.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this National Trust for Scotland property. The great advantage is the central location if you are staying in Edinburgh – not to be missed!
