I have been dining at this restaurant in Saskatoon for about 30 years – since it opened in 1986. Whenever I visit Saskatoon, whether for business or pleasure, I always stop by Calories to see what is on offer. The name implies delicious desserts and it has those in spades. If you can’t decide between two options you can often get two half orders; just remember to ask them to put them both on the same plate or you’ll be presented with two plates of sweets!
The restaurant has grown and been renovated numerous times since I first entered the door of the little café all those years ago. What hasn’t changed is the quality of the food (local and made fresh) and the service. On my most recent visit I wanted something light for supper. I chose the mussels and frites ($18). It was a Friday night and the place was buzzing with families, couples and singles of all ages. Twenty minutes later I learned that there were no mussels to be had so I was required to order something else. I settled on the mushroom quiche and organic greens with raspberry vinaigrette ($14). As a consolation for the delay in telling me my selection was not available I was given a free dessert. I chose the red wine poached pear and almond tart ($6). Everything was delicious as usual. Then next day I stopped by to purchase a loaf of wild rice bread ($5) on my way out of town and to do some shopping in the trendy Broadway neighbourhood where the restaurant is located. I’ll be back another time for the mussels.
I just paid another visit (Fall of 2015) for coffee and dessert and it was heaven: a cafe au lait Parisienne ($6.00) and a slice of blueberry and lemon cheesecake ($6.50). The milky coffee was perfect and the dessert was light and tart and sweet, but not too sweet. The combination was perfect. A delightful way to spend some time on a Sunday afternoon…
