We visited Bourton-on-the-Water during our tour of Cotswold villages. As you would expect most of the village is a conservation area with its honey-coloured stone architecture. The River Windrush runs through the centre and is crossed by little stone bridges, which accounts for the nickname “Venice of the Cotswolds.”
Although it was a weekday outside of the main summer season, it was still busy. I found that it was a bit of a trek for me, on my sticks, from the car park down towards the river. Eventually we found a vacant seat to relax with an ice cream and “people watch”.
There are plenty of attractions for the tourist; the Dragonfly Maze, Birdland Park and Gardens, the Cotswold Motoring and Toy Museum, the Model Village, Hawkstone Brewery, Greystones Nature Reserve, Cotswold Clubhouse. and Bourton Vale Equestrain Centre. Of course, there are numerous places to eat , drink and stay.
Some years ago we stayed at Bourton in the autumn. At that time it was peaceful and beautiful with the riverside trees in gorgeous shades of orange, yellow and red. That would be the time I would recommend for your visit.
