Why is it whenever you find the most incredible, welcoming restaurant it is the last day of your holiday?
That is what happened after a cold, wet first time visit to the Lake District. Our four star hotel was not the stuff of dreams we had expected and in desperation during our last day we investigated the town for an alternative dinner venue and we found it by sheer chance in sheltering from the rain.
Unassuming, unpretentious but oh so warm in its embrace and welcoming. The menu was a true change from the staid sameness we had been presented with over the last six days and apparently changes according to availability of fresh deliveries. Other half was over the moon to find fresh scallops as a starter and they were quite happy to expand it into a main meal for him. The smile on his face said it all. My lamb rump was the tenderest I have ever had!
This old coaching inn, in the surrounding historical elegance of the town, with its creaking floors which definitely adds character, is a must to anyone who needs the sustenance of an enjoyable meal with an incredible choice of wines from all over the world combined with the friendly accommodating service that seems so sadly lacking in so many hotels. You need to go there!
