Costa Rica has a rich biodiversity and offers so much to do, as well as spectacular beaches. For solo travellers especially, this island has an arms-wide-open approach to visitors so you’ll feel welcome wherever you go. From cliff hikes or taking to the surf, to feasting on Casado and lazing on white sands, Costa Rica has something for every solo travellers over 50.
Here Silver Travel Advisor rounds up a handful of the best places to visit as a single / solo traveller over 50 for holidays to Costa Rica.
Highlights for your single/solo holidays to Costa Rica
Manuel Antonio
The Manuel Antonio National Park has it all. With fine-sand beaches and a jungle canopy that’s bursting with life, it’s the ultimate getaway for a single holiday to Costa Rica. When you get bored of sunbathing or surfing, why not take a guided tour through the forest where you’ll meet other like-minded travellers. Stay in Quepos, the once sleepy fishing village which is now a honey pot for tourists with plenty of restaurants, bars and other attractions to enjoy.
Dominical
Fancy finding your balance on a surfboard? Dominical is the place to do it. The waves here attract surfers from around the world so if ever there was a time to dip your toes in, it’s here. For solo travellers over 50 who prefer to stay on dry land, Dominical is home to a thriving arts and crafts scene. Try your hand in workshops or channel your inner zen by booking a group yoga retreat.
Best of all, Dominical has a laid-back vibe and the jungle areas that surround the beaches make you feel you’ve arrived in paradise. With warm, tropical weather and just enough amenities, it’s like getting off the beaten track, but with a few creature comforts.
Osa Peninsula
Tucked away on the Osa Peninsula is the Corcovado National Park, a unique rainforest that borders the beach. Here you’ll find a winding network of trails, with routes for hikers of all abilities. The park also has great spots for diving and fishing giving avid explorers a different perspective of the island.
With the option to take a boat to beautiful Drake Bay, or dive the idyllic Isla del Cano, it’s no wonder that Costa Rica was named one of the world’s best travel destinations in 2023.
Tortuguero National Park
The best way to see this park is by boat. Known as an important nesting ground for leatherback turtles, you’ll find the Sea Turtle Conservancy Visitor Centre within the park. It’s bordered by canals and lagoons which you can explore on a boat tour – be sure to keep your eyes peeled for manatees and river otters as you go.
San José
For history and culture enthusiasts, San José has a lot to offer. The Museo Nacional de Costa Rica has a wealth of artefacts from the island’s past or you’ll find America’s largest collection of jade at the self-titled Museo de Jade. Elsewhere in San José, be sure not to miss Mercado Calle Nacional de Artesania y Pintura market which is stacked with Costa Rican treasures to take home. There’s also the Plaza de la Cultura and the National Theatre and Museum, both well worth a visit on your single/solo holiday to Costa Rica.
If it’s a laid-back feel for adventure you’re craving, crowned with stunning beaches, spectacular scenery and hospitable and friendly locals, Costa Rica has to top the holiday bucket list.
