Recipe: Fried Green Tomatoes
Serves: 6
Our recipe to try at home has to be fried green tomatoes! Rather boring to look at however delicious to eat. And recipe is in ‘American’ so adapt to British measurements as you go. Yummy for breakfast with fried eggs.
Ingredients:
- waxed paper
- 1 ½ large eggs
- 1 ½ tablespoons water
- ¾ cup all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup yellow cornmeal
- sea salt to taste
- freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 1 ½ pounds green tomatoes, sliced
- ¾ cup canola (or rapeseed) oil for frying, or as needed
Method:
- Line a baking sheet with waxed paper.
- Beat eggs and water in a shallow bowl. Place flour and cornmeal in 2 separate shallow bowls. Season cornmeal with salt and pepper.
- Dip each tomato slice into flour, then dip into egg mixture. Press tomato into cornmeal mixture, shaking off excess. Transfer tomato to prepared baking sheet. Repeat with remaining tomato slices, arranging tomatoes in a single layer.
- Heat about 1/4 inch canola (or rapeseed) oil in a large frying pan over medium heat until the oil begins to shimmer. Fry tomatoes in batches until golden and crisp, 3 to 4 minutes per side. Drain on paper towel-lined plates. Repeat with remaining tomatoes.

Heartbreak Hotel. It reminds me of my first date. The song was playing in the background when I was having coffee after the meal.

Would love to read this book and then, maybe, experience some Southern Lovin’.
“The Wonder of You” is such a beautiful long song, a tribute to the singer’s partner.
Echoing the feelings of everyone who loves someone completely, the lyrics portray the singer as someone who is so in awe of their partner, that they think themselves to be ultimately unworthy of the love of such a special and wonderful partner.
He recounts so many reasons why that person is the best person to love him, as they have an innate ability to understand him, and comfort him. Strangely, he doesn’t mention anything positive that he can bring to the relationship, he focuses on his many shortcomings instead.
He’s aware of his many human flaws, but can’t believe how lucky he is that this wonderfully understanding and giving person loves him completely.
As well as the meaningful lyrics, the song has the most beautiful melody, harmony and backing, and in my opinion, is the best Elvis song.
My favourite Elvis song is ‘Suspicious Minds’. It’s so easy to sing along to.
The wonder of you! What a song and what wonderful sentiments it expresses and has been chosen as music at a couple of funerals for very special family members.

Elvis Presley started singing in the local gospel hall in Tupelo. He visited Sun studios, in Memphis, where for X amount of money a person could make a a Demi disc. He was ‘discovered’ as they say, and the rest is history. I like so many of his records, but the one that stands out for me is “Are you lonesome tonight?”
He sings it so sincerely, his voice so poignant. He comes across as the gospel singer he once was.
In the ghetto, Elvis sings as if he understands.

Jailhouse Rock from the 1957 film: I went to see the film with my two best friends from school and I just loved all the music in it. However, the title song reminds me how everything around us was changing so fast – Elvis sounded great, looked amazing and his dancing was exciting.
Love Always on my mind. I don’t know why. Maybe a reminder we should try harder for each other. It has so much meaning for me and he sang it beautifully. And isn’t Elvis still on our minds.
Viva Las Vegas, because it evokes the frantic atmosphere of Las Vegas so well.
Whilst I’m a big fan of ‘Always on my mind’, recorded after Elvis separated from his wife in 1972, I equally love the completely different synthpop version by the Pop Shop Boys, recorded to mark the 10th anniversary of his death.

Crying in the chapel – so difficult to choose as he was amazing and made every song special. This same question came up at a dinner party last night and no one had the same answer!!!
Blue Suede Shoes because it reminds me of dances we used to have in the 70s and that song always got people up on the floor.
I got my first record player, a Phillips, when I was just 13 and Elvis singing

Blue suede shoes, his voice is so powerful on that.
Always on my mind was my godmothers favourite song and she was the biggest Elvia fan and the most inspirational and loving woman I ever knew and the evening I got the news she had passed I went to tell my elderly mother her sister had gone I got in my car and literally started my journey and that song came on and I couldn’t believe so it is now my favourite Elvia tune
Viva Las Vegas reminds me of my son’s wedding in Las Vegas ! Great holiday

‘Promised Land’ – Elvis loved the USA & this song is literally a whistle-stop tour of the states.
