Variety Cruises

This month the Silver Travel Book Club – proudly sponsored by Variety Cruises – is reading Spaghetti in a Suitcase: My Journey to The Seychelles by Felice Soru, a story based on true events.

Having been born and raised in a small town in Sardinia, Felice always felt a deep wanderlust. Days spent on his family’s vineyards left him eager to escape until a chance encounter with an ostentatious entrepreneur changed the course of his life. Signor Cossu was a flamboyant Sardinian businessman who offered Felice a job in his business, which was based in the Seychelles. A blind date had been set with the enigmatic archipelago somewhere in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

Despite arriving when the country was in the throes of a coup d’état, Felice quickly carved out a good life in Mahé. While working for a company that was responsible for some of the largest developments in the Seychelles, Felice fell in love with Helena, a native Seychellois. They quickly became inseparable, indulging in all the islands had to offer, from the nightlife and intoxicatingly beautiful beaches to the unique Creole culture.

  1. Paradise is a state of mind, a state of being.
It can be found in church, in heaven or terrestrially in the Seychelles. Is there anywhere more beautiful?

  2. Paradise ,to me is out from cities, colour of green and got to be blue water.

  3. My late husband had travelled to the Seychelles many years ago and he too described it as paradise, so I always think of it that way and would love to find my own paradise out there.

  4. Paradise for me is tranquility, preferably with blue skies, white sand and clear water

  5. The Seychelles is our paradise having got married there, standing barefoot on a beautiful sandy beach!

  6. It would be difficult to compete with the Seychelles to picture paradise. I would say somewhere beautiful, calm, tranquil, safe with clear skies and oceans.

I have to say the book sounds very interesting but I would be more than happy to step into the life Felice left behind and visit beautiful Sardinia. I’d be more than happy to work in his family vineyards.

  7. Paradise is a place of serenity, wherever it might be located; a place t enjoy peace and quiet with the one(s) you love.

  8. The Bluebell Glen was a place close to home in Crombie, Fife, Scotland where I and friends used to frequent and play on rope swings. These childhood memories bring back places of a simple paradise.

  9. I haven’t made it to that paradise they call the Seychelles, yet! However I have visited Alaska. This was a true paradise for me. The scenery and wildlife, surrounded by peace and quite for most of the journey. One of our stops had a view of Mount McKinley, bliss. No rushing about, no noisy scrabble for seats etc. Just a paradisal voyage through the wilds of a beautiful country.

  10. Paradise, for me, is the Caribbean – IF I have to be away from home!

  11. I once went to a small place on the Indian ocean. It was called Fujera. It was paradise. The beach was like the bounty ad.

  12. Paradise is a wonderful view to a far horizon, maybe over to the coast, or over mountains giving you a sense of exploration and peace, and worth the climb to see that view!

  13. Having just returned from the Seychelles that has to be my Paradise. This was a second visit in just over two years, both times cruise based, first time on the Crystal Espirit around the northern granitic islands, but second time on the Silver Explorer setting out from Zanzibar to take in the limestone atolls. Is there anywhere else in the world like Aldabra with its amazing variety of birds, tortoise and fish, then what can beat a lemon shark just swimming nonchalantly under our zodiac. Was I prepared for the huge ocean swells getting off the ship on to the zodiac – no! But it’s all part of life in Paradise when you wLk along the White sand beaches and swim in the Indian Ocean which is just like taking a warm bath. We ended up back in the granitic islands which are equally special in their own way, but of course much more focussed on tourism.

  14. From Fife to Fujera, Sardinia to the Seychelles, it all sounds like paradise to me. Such wonderfully descriptive prose from you all. It makes me want to go to all those places. My paradise is the Algarve. The soft warm sands under my feet, the sun kissing my skin, the refreshing spray of a lively sea and the call of the sea birds backed by clear blue skies. Paradise is a beach. 🏖⛱

  15. Variety is Paradise. Good weather, good food, good friends some exhilaration, and surprises but also peace and tranquillity . A big ask!

  16. Paradise to me is the sandy beaches of the Dominican Republic. Powdery sand with fresh blue water is absolutely paradise!

  17. Whilst many associate sun, sand and sea with paradise, for me, it’s the African bush. The anticipation and excitement of setting off on a game drive with no idea of what you might see is truly magical: as guides are swift to remind you, ‘animals cannot be ordered on Amazon’. A luxury tent, with decking for more animal spotting, and perhaps a plunge pool to cool off in the heat of the day, and wonderful al fresco meals followed by nightcaps and campfire tales of ‘the one you nearly saw’, is my idea of paradise.

  18. the coconut grove behind Paradise Beach, Mirissa in the south of Sri Lanka. Sound of waves breaking round the horseshoe shaped beach. Birds in the palm trees ……

  19. Today I am sitting in my favourite chair, in my comfortable flat, looking across the road to the cliff and the Atlantic Ocean. Today this is Paradise. When I visit family in Malta and sit on a beach laughing with my cousins I am in Paradise. When I travel, explore new countries, towns, beaches, rivers, mountains I am in Paradise.

  20. I’m easy to please when it comes to paradise – anywhere by the sea is my happy place!

  21. Paradise for me is a body of water – either calm, clear (preferably warm) sea with sand underfoot or a swimming pool that I don’t have to share with many other people – so I can do a gentle breast stroke, think of nothing in particular, but just enjoy the feeling of freedom.

  22. Paradise is perfect snow, clear blue sky and sunshine on a ski holiday in the Jungfrau Region of Switzerland!
