Can You Be Too Old To Cruise and Is There an Age Limit?

Silver Travel Advisor

If your sense of adventure is calling you to sea air, freedom and some incredible destinations, a cruise is a great way to satisfy it. You can explore the world and make new friends while enjoying all the comforts of home.

So what’s the perfect age for cruising? Can you be too old to cruise? In this blog post, we’ll talk you through some different types of cruises to find out what might suit you best.

What are the benefits of cruising for over 50s?

One of the best things about cruising is that there’s so much on offer. Although, on most ships, you’ll find plenty of bars and restaurants on board as well as a pool, spa and entertainment, your itinerary is your own. With the choice to be active or relax as much as you like, cruising caters to whatever mood you’re in. Since it’s a popular way for single travellers to explore, you’re likely to find plenty of opportunities to meet new people too.

Is there an age limit for cruising?

To be honest, age is just a number when it comes to cruising. There’s something to suit every wallet or preference. While some cruises are geared up for families with younger children, others are better suited to those looking for an educational, culture-orientated trip for over-18s only. That’s why it’s important to think about the kind of atmosphere you’d enjoy and what you’re looking to get out of your trip.

If you’re travelling as a multi-generational family you’ll often find child-free zones to enjoy a little grown-up time out. Ships that cater to a wide range of ages tend to be amongst the biggest since they offer the widest range of activities.

What’s an expedition cruise?

If you’re feeling adventurous, an expedition cruise has a real sense that you’re going off the beaten track. These types of cruises are often in remote and naturally beautiful areas on smaller ships designed to go where the larger ones can’t.

Think less noisy night-show and more history and culture. You’re more likely to find yourself in an interesting seminar than on a water slide and may have access to specialised gear that’s ideally suited to exploring your environment.

Luxury ocean and river cruises

Luxury ocean cruises come in incredibly luxurious packages with some good deals you can take advantage of. As the ultra luxury ships are smaller in size, they dock at smaller ports, offering the chance to see some of the world’s most famous cities and historic sites, allowing you time and space to relax while the world floats to you.

As for river cruises, these are becoming increasingly popular due to their ability to offer a more intimate and boutique experience. If you’re paying for something at the top end of the scale, you can expect to have drinks included with meals, bikes to ride ashore, excursions and a lecture program. It’s a different experience to a big ocean liner, filled with culture and personalised service.

So can you be too old to cruise? We’d say a resounding ‘no’. If you think carefully about what you’d like to get out of your trip, research the excursions and activities and find something that suits your physical level, the world will always be your oyster.
