This morning we departed our berth around 8.00 am and continued our cruise along the River Douro, at one stage passing under the Alpendurada Monastery where we had been so royally en-tertained the previous evening and arriving at the town of Regua late morning.
Our daily excursion today was to the town of Lamego, famous for its 14th century baroque Sanctu-ary of Our Lady of Remedies. The Sanctuary is still high on pilgrim’s programmes, some actually making the journey up the 680 steps leading to the Sanctuary on their knees.
The town also boasts a 12th century Moorish castle which yours truly made the climb to. Amazingly well preserved and with interactive facilities to follow its history, I was amazed at both the views from the ramparts and the fact there was no admission charge.
Lady luck was with us as well as we were in position to witness the town’s annual Fire Brigade march with brass band, ceremonial dressed ‘Bomberdieros’ and vintage vehicles.
On our return journey to Viking Hemming our coach climbed a very steep river side hill so that we could visit the Sandeman’s Winery for a tour and tasting – all included in Viking Hemming’s river cruise price.
The evening was spent berthed alongside at the town of Pinhau where we will return on our return journey later in the week.
