Culture/Sightseeing

Ekesparre Boutique hotel is in the small town of Kuressaare on the Estonian island Saaremaa.

We found a historical and beautifully restored early 20th century Jugend-style (Art Nouveau) villa with only ten rooms. We were in number six on the first floor, but there was no lift or help with bags, but the receptionist told us it was her favourite room as we could see the Medieval Kuressaare Episcopal Castle from the bedroom window. The room had two rather soft singles pushed together with individual duvets, two pillows each, and bedside tables with lights. There was a desk and chair, well stocked mini bar, TV, and wardrobe with safe, slippers and robes. Whilst there was a fan there was no air conditioning, but in September this wasn’t an issue.

The reasonably sized bathroom had a shower cubicle, and sufficient space for toiletries although soap, shower gel, conditioner and body lotion were all provided in large containers. The wall mounted hairdryer and mirror combination was good, and there were plenty of towel hooks and rails.

Our balcony, shared with the adjacent room, had two metal chairs and a table, and although we had a superb view of the hotel gardens and castle, it was not warm enough to sit out during our stay.

Up a rather steep flight of stairs was an attic library with comfortable squishy chairs, a supply of books and an English country house vibe.

Breakfast, available between 8am and 11am, had elegantly laid tables in the bar area. We were served a smoothie of the day (raspberry and sea buckthorn during our stay), and a glass with diced fresh fruit. We could help ourselves from the substantial cold buffet and opt for a freshly cooked hot dish from a menu with a variety of egg dishes, pancakes and porridge. Champagne coupes were on the table, and although the fizz was a little flat and a very small serving, it was nevertheless a nice touch. Coffee was good with top ups being offered and accepted.

Food was not available in the hotel, but it had a separate restaurant a short walk away, Ku-Kuu Fish Restaurant, which we discovered was closed for the winter season. However, it was only a short walk into town, with a variety of places to eat.
