If you want to explore the Wye Valley but don’t want the crowds you might run into in Ross- on-Wye, try a stay in “Fownhope”:https://sites.google.com/site/fownhopevillage/home. This lovely village is on the main road between Ross-on-Wye and Hereford and is a tranquil and picturesque spot. In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Fownhope is on the banks of the River Wye and boasts some great walks so it’s a good base for a walking holiday.

We enjoyed an afternoon here on a trip home from Cornwall. We stayed at the “Greenman Inn”:https://www.silvertraveladvisor.com/review/accommodation/189136-review-the-greenman-inn and though we had some issues being able to get a good night’s sleep, we did enjoy delightful drinks in the garden in the afternoon and a delicious meal that evening in the “dining room”:https://www.silvertraveladvisor.com/review/restaurant/189151-review-the-greenman. There are other options for staying over in this village, including B&Bs.

In addition to the Wye Valley Walk, there are five circular walks varying in length from 3 to 8 miles and there are two Iron Age forts nearby: Capler Camp and Cherry Hill. It is a lovely area to explore.
