This winter instead of spending the coldest, darkest, winter months and bemoaning the high cost of energy we are charged here in the UK, we decided to try mainland Spain. We rented a house for 5 weeks right by the beach just outside a town called Oliva, which is probably half way between Valencia and Alicante. This was the first time we’ve tried anything like this, we normally just take one or two weeks in November and January, either in the Canaries or Madeira to get a top-up of vitamin D.
In short, it wasn’t perfect, we didn’t bring enough warm clothes, the location was great but it was a bit of a walk to find a restaurant that was open and we should have bit the bullet and taken our car so as to have more flexibility.
We enjoyed trips to Valencia and other local towns, the food was great and we will definitely do this again but with more knowledge of mainland Spain in winter.
