White Island is a live volcano. There is one company who runs trips to it although you can go by helicopter. You’re about an hour and a half on the boat there and back and they provide lunch (will cater for any special dietary requirements). Climbing off the boat can be a little tricky but my husband managed with help. Most of the volcano is underwater and you are led in a small group to the crater itself. You are also issued with hard hats and face masks and you do need the masks – the smell is so strong at times you can hardly breathe! Just amazing to see the sulphuric rocks and the steam escaping at regular intervals.
And an added bonus – on the boat trip we saw several pods of dolphins! Couple of hints – wear trainers or similar grippy shoes – take a warm jacket as it’s chilly on the boat.
Well worthwhile. You do have to book in advance but it’s easy to do. Link should be below.
