My family and I spent 10 days in Vilanova i la Geltru this summer and stayed in an apartment that we booked through airbnb. We wanted somewhere quite close to Barcelona as I had never visited the city. There is a regular train service from Vilanova into Barcelona and the journey takes about 45 minutes. We found Vilanova to be a charming place with great beaches and it was not too busy in July. Nearly all the holidaymakers were Spanish. There are plenty of restaurants of various cuisine but we preferred the authentic Catalan ones. The highlights for me though, were the couple of trips that we made in to Barcelona. I was wary about going there as I had heard all the stories about pickpockets etc. However, we had no problems whatsoever. I would therefore recommend Vilanova as a great place for a beach holiday with the option of visiting Barcelona as often as you choose. Suitable for all ages.
