We always enjoy staying in accommodation a little different, and so I was overjoyed to find this spectacular accommodation at Veli Rat Lighthourse. We flew out to Croatia at the very end of their season which meant that it was quiet and a lot of the bars/restaurants were already closed. We had a few days in an arty traditional apartment in Zadar and then got the ferry over to one of the many islands – Dugi Otok. The good thing about it being at the end of the season was the price for staying in the lighthouse at Veli Rat were a third cheaper. The lighthouse is very remote as are the villages on the island, so a care hire is definitely necessary. It was lovely to drive around the island and see the teeny villages, eating and drinking here was so cheap, although really you need to bring the majority of your supplies from the mainland. The lighthouse accommodation was spacious and spotless, looked after so beautifully by the lighthouse keeper and his wife and children (the only neighbours). We were told to batten down the hatches one night and closed all the wooden shutters around the lighthouse as there was a spectacular storm, On the last day the lighthouse keeper let us climb all the stairs right up to the very top of the lighthouse which was such a real treat too. A private little beach for sunbathing and swimming just adds to the real relaxation and feeling of utter escapism in this fabulous lighthouse.
