Turvey House is a private neo-classical style residence overlooking the River Ouse and is open about 4 days a month, and is in Historic Houses Association membership. In February behind the walled garden is a tremendous display of snowdrops covering a large area – quite dazzling in the sunshine.
You can also take about an hour guided tour of the house which was built in the 1790's, and still has a tunnel under the roadway for servants, leading to the kitchen area. It is very much a family home which makes the tour very interesting, and upstairs beside the bedrooms is a staircase which was made for the Great Exhibition, and transported to Turvey House. The main rooms have a fine collection of 18th and 19th century English and Continental furniture, interesting porcelain, pictures plus a library. The walled garden is very good in the summer.
