We have visited this lovely old pub several times this year. It is only a short distance from Colchester, Britains Oldest Recorded Town, and all its fantastic history. Big car park, level entrance, well-stocked bar, and large eating area, as well as tables outside in good weather.
The staff are always really willing, helpful and very polite, not intrusive at all. The menu selection is excellent, varied, and a mix of ‘favourites’ and specials. Pie of the day is home-made and always delicious. I particularly like the duck in orange sauce, served on a bed of mash and seasonal vegetables. Hubby says the steaks are tender, and always cooked as requested. Fish dishes are fresh and succulent, and desserts extremely tasty, and moreish! Vegetarian and gluten-free options always available, and waiting staff are fully conversant with their menu.
Cost is reasonable, and in line with other good eateries in this area. Four of us had three courses each, plus a bottle of rose, glass of sparkling water, and pint of shandy, all for less than £140. We also had signed up for their emails and received a one-off 10% discount off this price.
Totally recommended.
