My wife and I travelled to Edinburgh by car and therefore needed a hotel with its own car park. We chose the Roxburghe not only because of its parking facility, but because of its location at the top of Princes Street near to Edinburgh Castle and other main attractions. Further, we were to meet our daughter and her husband who were travelling by train, and wanted a hotel situated conveniently for Waverley Station.
We were very pleasantly surprised, however, to have chosen a delightful Georgian building, positioned on the beautifully preserved Charlotte Square (where there is a NT property free to visit for English NT members), with modern interior facilities. Our large, spacious room in the original part of the hotel was typical of the building – Georgian in style yet with modern amenities. We breakfasted daily, and dined on one evening, in the hotel, and found the quality of the cuisine matched that of the hotel generally.
We were able to walk easily from the hotel to restaurants and pubs nearby, but decided to start our walking days out by taxi to firstly Edinburgh Castle and then Holyrood Palace, as the centre of Edinburgh is built on a hillside and for those who may not be fully physically able, it is advisable to use either a taxi or public transport. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this hotel and would wholeheartedly recommend it.
