The Peak District and the Dales of Derbyshire include a National Park and the added attraction of a visit to Chatsworth, one of the country’s finest stately homes. For walking and sight-seeing with wonderful views and wildlife, there are few better areas of England – and there are two or three excellent golf courses, most notably Breadsall Priory which is spectacular and not too demanding.
For all these pleasures, we found an excellent base on the outskirts of the small town of Matlock. The Red House is an old Victorian home, with 9 rooms, very well run and with an excellent cuisine and we would recommend it to anyone wanting something different from the modern ‘chain’ hotels.
