The High Line is a must see if you are visiting New York City. The beautiful park has been built on the disused elevated railway tracks which originally served the meat packing area near the harbour. Two local residents decided to save the elevated tracks from demolition and suggested building a park. This is the most beautiful use of a railway I have ever come across. Some very well known garden and landscape designers were involved in the planning and planting including Piet Oudolf whose wonderful planting design gives the park all year round interest.
We visited on a warm April day and took a picnic from a local deli to eat our lunch in the peacful surroundings above the noisy city below. Visitors can stroll along the length of the tracks through different areas of planting and there are lots of nice seating areas. The park is now being extended along another part of the track they have managed to obtain for development and planting. This tranquil area is special and something quite different for a tourist visit to this lively city.
