I have been hearing about this little restaurant in Vibank, Saskatchewan for a few years and finally paid it a visit for lunch. It is not open for lunch on Thursdays and the hours are a bit unusual but it is a very popular place to eat. The Grotto is located in an old convent building which also houses the town office and post office so it is hard to miss the flag poles out front. If you are driving down Highway #48 from White City, just east of Regina, you will turn left off the highway onto Main Street then left again on 2nd Avenue (ignore the online directions saying to turn right on 2nd). Once inside the building, turn right and the restaurant is at the end of the hall. The atmosphere is very homey with lots of artwork on the walls.
The Grotto is run by a husband and wife team, Kevin and Cecilia Zimmerman. Cecilia is from Oaxaca, Mexico and people rave about the Friday night Mexican meals and the Saturday night BBQs for which you usually have to book reservations months in advance.
I went with a friend for lunch on a Friday and there was plenty of room for anyone who dropped in for a meal. My friend enjoyed chicken tacos with potato and cauliflower soup and I had lasagna with Caesar salad. The service was friendly and no one tried to rush us out the door once we had finished our meals. We hadn’t seen each other for months so we had a good chat and catch up.
Now that I have been, I will definitely be back.
