Stuart Line Cruises run their business on Exmouth seafront. We particularly enjoy the fishing trips. If you wait until the mackerel are in season, usually when the sea begins to get warmer in June, July or August, then this is the time to choose! If you decide to fish, the company provide you with a rod which has a special mackerel trace on, and with a quick word of instruction, your ready to go! If you decide to just watch, then it's a bit cheaper, and you can make the most of the gorgeous scenery. Usually the boat takes about 15 people, some are tourists, and some, like us are locals who love fishing. The boat is sturdy, but when the sea is rough, it can rock and roll, so unless you have good sealegs, choosing a calm sea is a must! The skipper has a fish finder on board, but is so experienced he knows the good sites. He goes over the sandbar and drops anchor. Everyone puts their line in, careful not to go too close to the person next to them, in case the lines get tangled! The idea is to keep your line moving up and down to attract the mackerel. Once you feel a bite, you reel in. It can be quite heavy if you've caught more than one! If you need help there's always a willing person to assist. I never like taking the fish off the hook, but the staff are always very helpful. If you're feeling thirsty, soft drinks are available to purchase, and also crisps and chocolate bars. It's amazing how hungry you feel whilst fishing at sea! At the end of the trip, which is usually about two hours, you can take your catch home. Barbecued mackerel, which have been freshly caught, are so Scrummy! They're hard to beat!
