The best way to visit Spinalonga is by ferry from Plaka. The first boat leaves at 9am, so you have an hour before the large boats arrrive. Enjoying the peace of this island and experiencing the isolation helps to imagine what it must feel to be exiled simply for being ill. This island was a leper colony until 1957 and the novel ‘The Island’ by Victoria Hislop is a must read before visiting the island. Avoid the big boats with guides as now some of the buildings have information, and travelling independently gives you the freedom to explore and stay for as long or as little as you want. September is a good time to visit as there is little shade and fewer tourists. Have lunch in Plaka as it is a picturesque village with many good tavernas.
