“The Sparrowhawk”:http://www.brunningandprice.co.uk/sparrowhawk/ near Formby, like its sister pub “Haighton Manor Freehouse”:https://www.silvertraveladvisor.com/review/restaurant/174031-review-haighton-manor-freehouse near Preston, is situated in a lovely old building surrounded by beautiful grounds. I went with an uncle and aunt for a meal one day in April and only just managed to nab a table. We had not booked because we had intended to get there earlier. However, for some reason we were running late and were lucky to be able to get in when we strolled in around 6:00 pm. The staff were very friendly and accommodating.
For a before dinner drink I ordered a gin and tonic. With the gin craze currently afoot in the UK, I had my choice from 70! How to narrow it down?
My aunt chose the chicken liver pâté with apple chutney and granary toast for a starter (£6.95) – I had a taste and it was delicious. My uncle had duck pancakes for a starter – not on the current menu. For our meal we all chose the child’s portion of deep fried cod in beer batter with chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce (£9.95) – it was plenty for three seniors! As good as it was, I can’t imagine being able to eat the regular size.
