Having flown British Airways to J’burg our connecting flight to Lilongwe was with South African Airways.
The business class section on the Boeing 737 had a 2 and 3 configuration and 8 rows but there was only four of us in the entire section. We were offered pre-take off newspapers with a G&T and had the undivided attention of two staff, resplendent in their red uniforms, including the fabulously helpful Victor who called us Miss Jackson and Mr Messenger every time he spoke to us.
There was no menu but a sample of the four available meals was shown to us which gave us a choice of fishcake, lamb chops, vegetarian pasta and chicken. We chose the latter two which were good and came with Greek salad, proffered bread basket, fruit sponge, cheese and biscuits and chocolate to have with our coffee.
The navy blue, velour seats had seen slightly better days but were comfortable and there was plenty of leg room. As there was no seat back entertainment, we took the opportunity to snooze on the two-hour, 20 minute flight which landed 10 minutes early.
Our holiday was off to a flying start.
