I first travelled to Skiathos with a group of friends on a package holiday, and fell in love. It’s such a pretty island, and so easy to get around (More about that later). Some of you may be familiar with its tenuous links with the film Mama Mia, but don’t let that put you off. Whatever you want from a Greek Island, you’ll find here.
The island is only twelve miles long, and most of the shops, bars and restaurants are centred in and around Skiathos town. You will be amazed at the choice! Even though it’s busy, there is still a definite Greek island feel about it. The only airport is just outside the town, and a favourite activity for holiday makers is standing at the perimeter when the planes fly in seemingly just above your head!
A short taxi ride (around 8 euros) takes you into town (Don’t be conned into paying tour operators the 50 euros they ask for). I would strongly recommend basing yourself in the town, and using the local frequent bus to visit the numerous resorts and beaches during the day. My favourite is Kanapitsa; a quiet sheltered bay with a good taverna and comfortable sun beds, but you may find your own slice of heaven on another beach.
I travel alone and independently, and feel completely safe here. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
