Towards the end of my tour of Croatia (see “Jewels of Croatia review”:http://www.silvertraveladvisor.com/review/escorted-tour/161611-review-jewels-of-croatia-saga-solotraveller) we arrived at a beautiful hotel in Solin. We had, included in the price, a tour of the Roman ruins of Salona.
Our tour was booked for 4 pm to visit the ancient part of Solin. It was torrential rain.
Would you believe that I was the only one prepared to get wet!! (out of 34 people) Amazingly the rep said that the tour would run just for me so off I toddled with the guide, driver and 55 seater coach on my tod! I told them all, with a smile, that their skin was water proof and that were wimps. They laughed but they said they were just sensible! Anyway, just about to leave when two others ran out to join us.
A man, a Retired historian and lecturer, and another lady. So, with the very knowledgeable guide we had an elongated bespoke tour of what they say is one of the largest Roman settlements outside Rome. The extra lady thought it better than Pompeii. I’ve not been, so can’t comment.
Vast, lots of sarcophagi over 2,000 years old and beautiful. Basilica, huge remains of settlement for 35,000 people, vast amphitheater for 18,000, a smaller one and loads more. Much remains but sadly much was destroyed by the Venetians. As there were only three of us we also walked the whole of the top of the Roman city wall. It was utterly amazingly. Only ones there! Those Romans could have taught us a thing or two. So much luxury and clever design over 2,000 years ago.
The joke was that, much as it was heavy rain when we arrived, it soon stopped and was just drizzle so was fine. Had long jacuzzi bath to warm up afterward! Smiling face with smiling eyes!! Everyone else was very jealous and restless when we got back.
Their choice!!
Tip – never miss an opportunity. It may not come your way again 🙂
