This lovely old castle hotel situated in the hilltop town of Ruthin is a most welcoming place with efficient and friendly staff.. Our enjoyable stay started with a walk around the large well kept gardens, where the 13th century stone walls are graded as listed ancient monuments. The friendly resident peacocks accompanied us too!.
The historical ambience of the hotel makes it rather unique. We stayed in a standard 'Noble' room, which was clean, spacious with a most comfortable bed and good views to the side grounds. The large lounge, with a decorative stone fireplace to sit by reading the daily newspapers and magazines on offer was a most pleasant room with views of the garden terrace. Berties restaurant was a delightful place to eat in. Our Welsh Bakery breakfast had a plentiful choice of cereals, fruit, ham and eggs, but a cooked breakfast could be ordered for a supplement. The Library Bar menu and drinks were reasonable with a good choice for smaller appetites. The Spa and treatments on offer were very tempting too but unfortunately we were unable to participate on this occasion.
Just a ten minute walk into Ruthin and St Peter's square, with its beautiful church, some lovely individual shops and a good choice of restaurants around is recommended.
This hotel has lots to offer i.e. medieval banquets and would be a marvellous setting for a wedding. We are already looking forward to our next visit.
