Reasons for trip

This is a chain pub (Greene King, Flame Grill) so my expectations were not very high, I am glad to say they were lifted by dining at this welcoming pub. They serve food from 12-8pm every day but we visited during the day (2pm) to take advantage of the Seniors’ Menu which costs just £5.95 for two courses or £6.95 for three. We had a choice of 2 starters, 7 mains and 3 desserts. They are also featured on the main menu but your getting a smaller portion in this deal which suited us fine as we enjoy a smaller portion then we can fully enjoy all the courses. I chose the tomato and basil soup which was served with bloomer bread and was piping hot and very tasty. My husband had chicken liver pate and said it was smooth and enjoyable. I then moved along to Hunter’s chicken which was half a chicken breast cooked well but tender dressed with bacon, cheese and a BBQ sauce. This was served with a small but adequate amount of crispy chips. My hubby chose a thick slice of gammon topped with an egg and also served with chips. We finished this off with a Bramley apple pie and hot custard and I had chocolate fudge cake with ice cream. the ice cream was not my usual choice of home-made luxury ice-cream but at this price that would not have been possible. The food was well presented, the cutlery was very clean ( I always inspect this whilst I am waiting as I think it shows the level of attention to detail or lack of depending if this meets my standard of cleanliness). The waiting time was 10 mins which I find reasonable as the pub was about half full. All the food was also hot when it reached the table not luke-warm as you foten get in chain pubs. The toilets were also clean and tidy. There was a reasonable amount of space between the tables so you could engage in conversation without being overheard, and we chose a window table of which there are a few. We also noticed a large circular table in the middle of the room which accommodated large parties in comfort. There were plenty of windows to the room so light was plentiful which made my hubby happy as he hates dark gloomy pubs where he cannot see what he is eating! Overall good experience. Staff friendly and welcoming and answered my questions about the food and beer expertly. The flower baskets outside where well looked after and provide a welcoming touch even before you enter the premises. Would recommend during the daytime hours when we visited. It may be the same in the evening I am not sure as sometimes a pub’s character changes with the time of day. But excellent for lunch.
