What is so remarkable about this site is that it was only discovered in 1988, since when there had been, and still is, a huge excavation project. The arena had a capacity for 6,000 people. Buildings in the area were purchased under compulsory order to allow excavation to take place.
The theatre is set in the heart of beautiful Cartegena. It is not necessary to explore as part of a tour as there is so much information in the adjoining museum. Well worth a visit.
