As part of a cruise round the Aegean last year we visited the Parthenon in Athens. Somewhere I’d been looking forward to visiting for years. Sadly it turned out to be very disappointing.
We got there at about 10 o’clock on a Sunday morning in August. The place was absolutely heaving, full of tourists (which obviously you can’t complain about, being one yourself) so that we found it difficult to stay with our particular group, but more importantly, there were so many groups there and everyone all huddled together that unless you were standing right next to the tour guide you couldn’t hear a word of what she was saying. It was so very busy and noisy.
I would strongly recommend that you go there in the afternoon when I understand it’s a lot less busy and beware of pickpockets. We found out later on that one of our party (of about 10) had her purse stolen and another person had his camera stolen. So beware.
