This is often flagged up as one of the must see sights in Ortygia. The market is open every morning except Sunday. This is a traditional food market – there are no stalls selling clothes or household necessities. Stalls spill out along the side of Piazza Pancalli and via de Benedictis
Every imaginable sort of fresh fruit and vegetables are on sale, brought in by local farmers. There is fresh fish caught that morning as well as smoked or salted fish. There are nuts, seeds, pulses, dried fruit and spices as well as cheeses and olive oil.
This is a wonderful market – the colours and smells stimulate the senses.
