If seeing the Northern lights is on your bucket list, then Finland is the place to go see them. This was a once in a lifetime trip for us, so we went where we were most likely to see the aurora. The further north you go, the more likely you are to see them – although never guaranteed of course. The Aurora Zone provide complete packages, providing all outerwear clothing, boots, socks etc – everything you need really. They have differing ‘fitness levels’ holidays, ranging from gentle to hard. We choose the package that provided the activities that we wanted to do, which was classed as ‘medium fitness’.
Husky dog sledding (so much fun!) Snow-mobiling to a reindeer ‘farm’ – which took us to the Russian boarder. Ice-fishing, snow-trekking, and of course aurora hunting each evening, where we would go out in a small group, build a camp fire and wait!
We had our own hut (luxurious) with sauna! And I pre-booked a night in a ‘pod’ – a fully glass-ceilinged dome, which very, very, luckily for us, was the one night the lights showed themselves! I cannot recommend the Aurora Zone and the the Wilderness, Lake Inari, Nellim enough. The staff are simply the best. I cried when we had to leave to come home.
