Reasons for trip

A very interesting free museum that downstairs concentrates on the history of Barnstaple and surrounding areas.

I walk with a stick and some areas were a bit narrow for me so anyone in a wheelchair would struggle, especially on a busy day.

Up the huge staircase is a display of World War One. In it there are folders full of details of Barnstaple men who went away to fight, (many on the Somme) with details of their families, newspaper cuttings and known details of where they are buried along with numerous WW1 memorabilia.

It is a shame that this is upstairs. There is a stairlift which you get in for the first flight of stairs, out at the top, walk across a landing and then into another for the next flight of stairs.

The gift shop in my view was a bit pricey,£6 for a tea-towel so we did not purchase anything.

On the + side the tearoom does a beautiful cup of tea which is reasonably priced.
