My first day in Chile and have had to deal with a wrong accommodation booking and a small earthquake. Things can only get better. An early night as an early flight to Easter Island. Thinking back to past holidays and wonderful times. One of those was the other side of the world, Vietnam two years ago and a Mekong Delta River cruise.
We chose the Mekong Eyes two night cruise and were delighted with the boat, a beautifully converted wooden rice barge with 14 roomy, air conditioned, comfortable, en-suite cabins, dining room, bar and comfortable seating areas on deck and below.
A two night cruise means one full day and two half days on board, with the other half days being travel to and from Saigon. The food was excellent and plentiful and the staff pleasant and helpful. Access was easy and moving round on the boat no problem.
It was fascinating to watch life on the river with it’s floating markets, sampans and barges. We were able to walk or cycle along the lush paths following the waters edge, visit riverside villages and a traditional home for drinks. Our guide was very informative and able to answer all our questions. We also visited a traditional candy making factory and noodle factory. No modern machinery.
The highlight for me was a sampan trip. I had my own Sampan, wore a coolie hat and relaxed as my guide paddled me expertly down the narrower water ways. The peace, the quiet, the tropical plants full of colour. Magical memories.
