The Luzzu restaurant is perfectly situated along the Qawra coastline on the east of Malta, a sunny patio area overlooking the deep blue water across from one of the many coastal forts that once protected the island.
When in Malta, the best guide to a restaurant is its Maltese Platter as they are all a bit different from each other. This was an exceptional one with 4 slices toasted Maltese bread, lots of sun-dried tomatoes, aioli and ‘bigilla’ (made with garlic and broad beans), goat’s cheese, sweet small white onions and the best Maltese sausage we have had so far. This sausage is very dense, light in colour, and best if boiled first before roasting or grilling. Extra bread sticks helped to scrape round the last bits of delicious aioli … mmm lovely.
This is a substantial sharing platter, perfect for a leisurely lunch-time, especially with a smooth, red Maltese Marenzio Merlot, all for €25. We visited at the end of February when you could walk back along the bay towards the National Aquarium and spot the boat leaning precariously on the rocky point following recent storms. Not sure how long it will stay there, but it does provide a great photo opportunity so who knows, they may decide to keep it there.
