Reasons for trip

Travelling to Lewis was easy on the ferry from Ullapool and was booked in advance. It takes 2 hours 45 minutes. Passengers are asked to park across from the ferry and are checked in by a man in a van, very quaint! Be careful of cars and pedestrians when going from the car park to the ferry as it crosses a road which can be busy. The ferry is well equipped for eating places and bars. Lewis itself is a very friendly island with lots of historical places to visit such as the Callanish Stones, the Black House Museum, Dun Carloway a broch (iron age ruins), the small harbours and Stornoway town itself. The people are so friendly and will go out of their way to speak English even if they have been speaking to each other in Gaelic. The north of the Island, Ness area is very bleak even in good weather and can be very windy. We had wonderful weather which is quite common for early May and also there are no midges. We stayed in an Airbnb as it gave us a chance to meet local people and chat rather than being in a hotel. The roads are quiet in May and it is easy to drive around. Remember the road signs are in Gaelic but the English is written in smaller font underneath I would certainly recommend Lewis to anyone who would like a relaxing holiday in a place with a slower place of life.
